Man! That’s a lot of words, but I really did want to take a moment to discuss this Tuesday’s Little Caesar Bowl with Purdue against Western Michigan. I realize the Little C is the equivalent of being invited to the NIT, but it’s not like everybody get’s to play in a bowl game (right IU?), it just feels that way…
Regardless, the Boilers won, and as a Boilermaker, I’m proud of my boys.
You knew it was going to be a weird game when after their first touchdown (the first score of the game, mind you), WMU opted to go for the two point conversion rather than just kicking for the extra point. Purdue certainly answered, though… I mean on onside kick in the first half is weird, but *two*?!? And both successful? That’s just bizarre.
Now credit where it’s due. The WMU quarterback is really good down field. He has a great long-passing game, but really (really) needs to work on his red zone game. He threw away (pun intended) so many opportunities to win the game. I kinda feel bad for them.
As per the Boilers, I’m not sure what the deal was with them opting to play quarterback shuffle, but at least everyone got to play. As usual the game play itself was rather clumsy but effective. The only bad moment was #2 throwing a punch. Not sure what that was all about. You’ve already won. Whatever the opposing team says, just smile and nod. I’m sure there was free pizza waiting for you in the locker room.
Finally, I know you IU fans were disappointed that I didn’t mock you mercilessly after your loss of the old Oaken Bucket a few weeks back. I hope that fact that I’m mentioning your incredibly bad football program in today’s strip makes up for any slight you may have felt.
And with that I end Slightly Off-Topic for 2011. Be sure to check back on Sunday for the first strip of the New Year!
Just to keep the holidays rolling a little bit longer, I’d like to share a wonderful Secret Santa gift I was given by Daniel VanderWerff over at School Spirit. I recommended that you pop over there and read his comic the other day, so I will just take a moment to remind you that there are worse ways to spend an afternoon! Go. Read. Now.
Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope you are taking the time to enjoy the day with family and/or friends!
I had to finish this strip on the road away from Cintiq and stylus. I know there are those of you out there who create beautiful works of art with only a mouse, but I absolutely do not know how you do it. Oy Vey!
Regardless, it’s time to hit the hay and settle in for the evening so that Santa Claus can come and hopefully bring me that copy of Skyrim that I’ve been hoping for!
…cause if he doesn’t, we’re hitting the Best Buy on the way home!
Happy Holidays, folks!

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised, but I am, I’m happy to report, healthy as a horse… at least as healthy as a horse that can’t get a good night’s sleep but has accepted that and moved on. Today is about more important things, however. To whit:
Holy crap on a sharp shiny stick, I’ve made it to strip 500! This year has been such a challenge time and mega-insomnia-wise, I was seriously beginning to wonder if I strip #500 would ever see the light of day…
…but here we are, and I have a notebook full of scripts, so we won’t be going anywhere any time soon.
I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to stop by and read this strip. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy making it.

I swear, sometimes this marriage thing is just so unfair! The woman just does not understand the importance of things! I mean does she understand the pain she is putting me through?!? Some things are just not right.
I just want to play…

A heart-warming holiday story or a cautionary tale? You be the judge.
Here is a, perhaps, useful link.
I do feel kinda bad about this one, but this is what happens when I am over-tired and watching Christmas specials… It’s possible that I should have gone to bed… oh well… I just can’t resist the Grinch…
… the cartoon… not that Hollywood abomination from a few years back…
Some things are just wrong.
So Thanksgiving was fun. On the road the whole time, but Brittany was here, so that makes it a holiday!!! The end of the year is rushing up so fast though… not sure where the time went.
Also, a good friend and reader has been making with the t-shirts. You should check them out.
Also, also, for those who were expecting to see something else here today, it’s coming on Thursday… I tried to finish, but had to excise his Grinchness first…

Laurie asked that when I draw myself into the comic, if I could please stop drawing myself in that semi-realistic manner I’ve been doing recently because (and I quote) “it doesn’t look like you, and it kinda creeps me out.”
So a return to all things cartoony!
Okay, so an hour and a half is a bit much, but I didn’t actually pass out… but oh ye gods, it was interesting.
The soaking was fine, but when I got to the changing room, I was feeling that it might be an excellent time to erp out the contents of my stomach (which, happily, was empty). By the time I got to the lobby door, I was seriously questioning whether I’d make it the 15 yards to the car without a nice little involuntary lie down. I am not, however, a complete idiot, so I downed a bottle of water I was carrying and made my way to the car (I let Laurie drive). Five minutes later, when we arrived home, my temp had adjusted, my head had cleared and all was well with the world…
…bit of a whoosh, really.
Aaron at work called me a hot tub newbie, which isn’t actually true, but sometimes that relaxing can get the better of you. My actual preferred method of tubbing is the setup they have up in Marquette at the hotel we use when we are up at NMU with Brit. The pool is tremendously under-utilized and right next to the tub, so I tend to alternate 10 minute sessions in each… and I can do that for hours…
…which I’m also told is a bad idea, but it works for me.
In any case, next trip to the tub, I’m bringing a jug of gatorade or something…

So first, let me say up front before the corrections come rolling in that I didn’t do any research on the human brain, and therefore, I just assigned the functions to random locations. If you are trying to pass your anatomy exam based on anything contained within the world of Slightly Off-Topic, you are doing something very, very wrong.
That being said, wouldn’t that be a great surgery to offer some day? We spent the weekend in West Lafayette watching the Boilermakers roll over Northern Illinois in Basketball (okay — fair enough — it was only Northern Illinois) and Ohio State in football (though again, to be fair, who hasn’t beat Ohio State this year?!?). I do, however, find that every time I set foot on Purdue’s campus, I am hit smack dab in the middle of the forehead with this sense of regret that I never graduated from there.
An odd regret, perhaps, for a man that holds two degrees, but there you have it. When we left Indiana for California and a job at that wonderful old biotech, SyStemix, it was the right choice for my family, and honestly, my heart wasn’t in continued matriculation at the time. However, as soon as we had settled, financially, I went back to school, and it was a wonderful experience (though that full-time schooling and full-time job thing was a bit exhausting… God Bless Laurie for picking up the slack at home!). So, there’s no logical reason for it, but it is still… the great undone…
But whatever… someday. For now, there are more important things to be done… like convincing Laurie that just because Skyrim came out in Novemember, it doesn’t mean that I have to wait until Christmas in case “someone” wants to buy it for me…
…yeah… I’m losing that battle…
On this Veterans day, I don’t think there is much more that one can say other than “Thank you”. Thank you for your courage, your pain and your sacrifices in the name of our freedom.
To one particular veteran, Bil Keane, I would like to say a simple “Goodbye”. While I never put Family Circus in the same ranks as say a Calivn and Hobbes or a Bloom County, as a child reading the newspaper comics, you were always there, approachable and perfect for that sense of everyday… whimsy. You will be missed.

Sorry about the lack of comic yesterday. There was a slight deliriousness moment which I will talk about on tonight’s Saggy Man Breasts strip. At the moment, I’ll just focus the discussion on NaNoWriMo. NaNo is a windmill I always tilt at… and I always fail at.
Always…
But, I usually start the month all fired up and ready to write… but this year… I lack a story. Can’t seem to settle on a single, frickin’ thing to write. It’s more maddening that the writer’s block that usually hits at week two. I clearly just need to pick something and see where it leads me, but yeesh… blank white screen…
Anyone out there having better luck?
