Phew… What a weekend. Youmacon has come and gone. Brittany had a blast and I learned a few lessons:
- If you are going to an Anime convention, wear a costume. Even if you’re not part of the subculture (Bebop Rules), the native cosplayers will appreciate the effort… even if it’s just a pair of cat ears or a Narutard headband.
- Cosplayers have an obsessive need to hug each other. So much so that many were wearing signs advertising ‘free hugs’ or ‘hugs for pizza’. Tread carefully lest ye be glomped!!!
- Those showing somewhat more than the legal limit of skin are most likely to be those who really shouldn’t.
- Those who could get away with showing somewhat more than the legal limit of skin, most likely won’t, but will likely skirt that limit very closely.
- Anime cosplayers are amazingly creative and talented. Awesome costumes!
- There’s always a couple smelly guys whose costume seems to involve nothing more than walking around barefoot and talking loudly to anyone who stops moving. This is *not* limited to anime cons.
- If you go to a convention for the express purpose of helping someone else out running the Penguicon table, make sure they’ve actually shown up!!! Definitely make sure before dropping $50 bucks on a badge you don’t otherwise need!!!
- The Hyatt (any Hyatt) is a terrible place for a convention (any convention). Please world, stop having them there.
- A double bed isn’t. It fits *one* adult!
- I don’t care how tired you are, leave the hotel rather than eating in the hotel restaurant. There is little or no excuse for a $32 steak, a $30 plate of pasta or a $22 salad bar!
- Youmacon is a heck of an event!
It’s good to be home and have full net access again, though.
You’ll have to forgive the poor fellow. It’s a natural reaction. People in the Slightly Off-Topic-o-verse, are not used to seeing so many features and colors on a person. I’m sure he recovered in time to make sure the News Guy didn’t bogart all the Zagnuts. One can hope, anyway! Special thanks to Penny Arcade and PVP for the "costume inspiration".
Being a T/Th/Su comic, this is the last update prior to the holiday, so I’ll wish you a happy Halloween now…or a Blessed All Saints Festival if that is your thing. Have fun, be safe, and don’t set anything on fire in Detroit! Youmacon is this weekend, so we will be popping in to check things out. If you are an anime fan and are attending the convention, perhaps I’ll see you there. I’ll be the guy who looks like me. Brit will be a Mew Mew, Lion Magnus, someone from Persona, Tear and Sasuke. She takes her cosplay quite seriously…
It just figures though. I don’t watch baseball. I have a whole childhood full of baseball memories and not a one of them is pleasant, so I don’t watch MLB. However, Laurie has been showing some interest in the series (for reasons I don’t quite understand), so I decided to sit down and watch the game with her last night. And what happens on the one day that I decide to watch? Rain delay… I don’t know why I bother…
I am *soooo* glad I live east of the Mississippi now, because I have to tell you; the bacon ultimate cheeseburger with a side of onion rings and/or jalapeno poppers can not be beat! Happily, there is no such heart-destroying equivalent out here. Even that Wendy’s ripoff is dry, bland and not worth the effort.
So yeah…. Microsoft decides to show how creative and different PC people are by copying the Mac commercials. Good job, guys!
I miss the Amiga…
I know what you’re thinking, if you want to make a popular song parody, maybe you should start with something people might actually know. Fair enough, but for your convenience, I will include a link to the song on youtube. However, it *is* a video, and while there’s no nudity the themes are adult to say the least, so click carefully. We’ll discuss it in just a bit….
So this comic came about for two reasons. The first was simply to express the way I’ve been feeling lately. You see, the adenovirus has been running rampant throughout southeast Michigan and has implanted itself thoroughly in my respiratory system. To give you an idea how much fun it has been, I will remind you that this was originally supposed to be last thursday’s comic! It’s been bumped twice, but it is still applicable… and I can not stress this enough: Tylenol Congestion and Pain: Severe is AWESOME! Even so, I’ve been more out than in over the last week.
The second reason this comic exists is that it gives me a chance to discuss Repo – The Genetic Opera which hits theaters (limited release) on November 7th. I must admit that this movie intrigues me. It seems to be the modern answer to the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
On the plus side they have:
- a talented cast – Giles (Anthony Head), Alexa Vega, Paul Sorvino, Sarah Brightman and Joan Jett (cameo)
- an intriguing storyline – for profit organ transplants as a world-wide epidemic of organ failures
- an excellent soundtrack
On the negative side they have:
- She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named in a leading role (though reports are that she pulls it off)
- a tendency to aim low when it comes to good taste
- and did I mention that She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is in a leading role?
I am, of course, a prude, so even Rocky Horror left me feeling a little dirty… well…not Rocky Horror, but the audience participation folks… too many g-strings…
In any case, with this flick, I expect a short theatrical release followed by the same sort of midnight showings cropping up on and around campuses once the dvd is released. And dvd is how I expect I will eventually see this flick, but again, I’m a prude…
I had to depart from the usual four-square format of the strip due to an inability to find room within the panels for all the lyrics. To fit everything in, the required font was too small to be read at 800px wide, but I think this longer form serves well enough.
Greetings! Sorry for this folks, but I’ve just coughed up my only remaining lung, and I think that’s going to be a problem. If I could focus on the screen, I’d finish today’s update, but I can’t. I thought I was doing better yesterday, and even went to the Penguicon meeting, but ugh! It didn’t last. I will have to hit the doctor’s office tomorrow.
I realize this puts me squarely in the “lesser webcartoonist” category, but I’m a bit too achy to worry about it at the moment. I’m off to bed, see you Tuesday.
Dave
Let’s face it! He’s just the dreamiest. You have to wonder whether Joe, upon seeing the debates, thought "Awesome" or "WTF?".
Sorry about the mid-morning update, but after last night’s debate, I decided to bump today’s comic in favor of this. Do you like?
In any case, by a show of hands (or comments), how many of you thought that time spent watching the debates was time well spent? Who learned anything new from the debates? Who changed their mind about where the vote would be cast?
Yes…it’s time for another Narutard Sunday. In all honesty this is more of a Naruto, the Abridged Series joke than it is strictly a Naruto joke, but it amuses me, so we’ll go with it.
For those who are not steeped in the history of log humor, I suppose you could start here.
