#485 – Gone and a Cloud in My Heart…

#485 – Gone and a Cloud in My Heart…

(The orange bit is a poster by these guys.  More on that in a minute.)

I’ve mentioned in the past that I consider Canadian politics a spectator sport.  The parlimentary system is… fascinating to behold.  In the past 10 years, thanks to geography and easy access to the CBC, I’ve had a front row seat at the 3-ring circus that is Canadian government.  Now, I mean no disrespect here… All governments are a circus, but the differences between the way we do things here in the US and the way they do things in Canada is always an interesting study.

Regardless, in these last ten years, there has been a lot of change in Canada, and lot of individuals rising rapidly and fading just as quickly… but all of this time there was Jack Layton, as well.  Comical, commanding, ludicrous and sincere.  He fought for what he believed in, and he fought hard.  Finally, this past May, he carried his party from near obscurity at the start of the decade to the position of Opposition Leader, and it was clear that more change was coming.

He passed away yesterday morning after losing his battle with cancer.  I’m not a Canadian (clearly), but the news hit hard.  I think it’s because there are so few political leaders out there these days that seem able to command genuine respect as Mr. Layton did.  Sure, he was goofy at times, but he fought for what he believed in… again and again.  When we heard the news, and as we watched the report, Laurie sat on the couch with me, and she cried.  I think that sums up the kind of leader he was.  Reading the news and commentary on the web, it’s pretty clear that most of Canada feels the loss whether an individual agreed with his politics or not, they know that the country has lost a rare gem.

A few days before he died, Jack penned a final letter to the Canadians he loved so dearly.  Those words have struck a chord with many, and within hours of the letters release, it started spawning derivative works such as the poster I cite above.  I can’t say anything better than Jack said himself, so I hope they don’t mind my passing that poster on to you in my own tribute.  A leader to the end.  A class act.  Jack, you will be missed.

#484 – Gone in a Flash…

So, I guess this was the Touchpad’s greatest weekend!  When HP announced friday night that they were liquidating the things at $99 a pop, the world went on a WebOS buying frenzy!  HP sold out in minutes, and there were lines at every physical shop with stock the following morning.  Best Buy was the most interesting case.  They spent Saturday refusing to sell the things “as they are no longer supported by the manufacturer” and then promptly sold them on Sunday to those who showed up… just in case.  Go figure.

As for me, I tried to snag a couple (one for me and one for Brit) through Walmart as they had good stock, but they told me that they had to be ordered via the web for store pick-up to get the price (though they’d happily sell me one at $399), but when you ordered via the web, they charged your card and then cancelled the order an hour later.  Walmart had better fix the charges soon or… there will be words.

Twitter’s been fun to watch.  There were two camps.  The “I want one crowd” and the “WebOS is dead, why would I want that thing crowd”.  I can see the latter groups point, but at $99, even without another app ever being released (and that’s discounting the homebrew preware group) or linux or android ever being able to be installed, it’s an awful nice platform for browsing (with java and flash), email, social networking, Kindle book, epub and pdf reading.  It seems a decent package for the price to me…

…but alas.  T’was not to be.

(Also, spent so long on panel #2, that I didn’t really leave myself time for the other panels… big picture, Dave… big picture…)

#483 – Enough is Enough, Already!

Now, before anyone starts calling prude, I’m perfectly aware that this is more clothing than a bathing suit at the beach, but come on!  They’re called underwear for a reason.  I don’t really need to see them.  I really don’t need to see them while I’m trying to eat my dinner.  Leave something to the imagination, for crying out loud!

…and guys…

For the love of God, would you please pull up your bloody pants?!?

(Hopefully, you all had a chance to see the bit of fan art I posted yesterday.  If not, be sure to hit the back button and check it out.  It’s pretty funny from an SO-T and DBZ point of view.)

Fan Art

Some of you may remember this comic which resulted from a reader’s comment regarding the News Guy’s hair.  Well, cartoonist Ahmed Fahim of Antisoshell whipped up this little flash ditty to bring it alive.  I am amused.  I hope you are too.

#482 – Naked

Stupid thumb drive.  Oh well, today’s was easy enough to redraw…  I assume his eyes don’t look too close together now?

I’m currently enjoying the sights and sounds of Chicago, and it reaffirms my belief that to live in a city, you have to really, really love petrol fumes… and sewer smells… and some really malodiferous folk…

…on the other hand, every so often you turn a corner out of a tangled mass of humanity, and you find yourself in a quiet little alcove with a few trees and a few bushes and it’s… nice.  You can relax.  Slow down, and breathe the diesel fumes.

I did get to meet up with my old friends John and Wes which was a perk, did about 4.5 hours of just walking about before the huge freakin’ storm rolled it, so it was a good day.  Today… I’m feeling touristy and may hit the Art Institute….

#481 – Snapped!

#481 – Snapped!

Doesn’t do you any good to have the comics done in advance when your servers go down, and you can’t upload them.  Apparently Site 5 was suffering an issue in one of their data centers and that took out my sites for most of the night.  I stayed up until 2am hoping they’d come back up, but then fatigue took me.  Clearly, I’ll just have to upload Thursday’s today as well, and let it auto-magically post.

In any case, it’s back up now and all is well with the world.

Now, I’ve been trying to draw Jane and The News Guy with some consistency using my more cartoony style.  Thoughts?  I was also in the book store last night and noticed that something was rereleased which directly affects what I can do in this storyline… but more on that later…

#480 – Wait… Is This Filler?!?

No… not filler… it’s an apology.  Hold out a second whilst I clear the cobwebs out of the server…

…ah… that’s better!  So, we’re back and (drum roll, please)… we’re buffered!  Only a week’s worth, but things have finally settled down enough for me to get back to those things I love the most (heck, I even embroidered this weekend).  Hopefully, you all managed to catch a few snickers over at Saggy Man Breasts during the interim.

Now, let’s get this story moving, already… (Drake U Lahr was soooo much easier!)

#479 – Gold!!!

Oh now those were indeed three of the best modules of the classic AD&D days!  I was in the thrift store the other day with the family (Brit likes looking for Vintage clothes and things she can use for Cosplay), and while I was digging through the books, I stumbled upon some old TSR AD&D supplements.  For the price of a quarter, I just couldn’t resist.  I also snagged a bunch of craft supplies, so a goodly trip!

#478 – Health and Safety

This one hits a bit too close to home.  Best to stay out of the basement if you ever stop by… I really do need to get it cleaned up though… I’ll get to that right away.. really…

One of the purposes of doing a continuity is to finally learn to draw my own characters with some sort of regular “style”.  I think these are my preferred character models for Jane and the News Guy, so let’s see how this goes.

#477 – Hey, I Said the *Closets* Were Clean

#477 – Hey, I Said the *Closets* Were Clean

Good Lord, it’s good to finally be home and doing the Sunday morning strip.  The Thursday flights worked out on schedule, but it seemed a bit of a bother to have to fly from Baltimore to Atlanta just to get back to Detroit… oh well, what are you gonna do?  The trip was well worth it, and that’s what counts.

For those that don’t recognize it, the poster is from last year’s Art Fair.  I really like it.  It’s as good as this year’s poster is bad… and it’s really bad.

Regardless, this may not be entirely what Jane had in mind, but in the News Guy’s defense, the closets are very clean.
