#469 – They’re About the Same…

That’s it… it’s official… I’m getting slower.  This strip took me almost an entire day to complete… yikes!

Regardless, the taxes are filed, and all is well with the world.  This year was decidedly less painful that previous years thanks to a tuition deduction, but still… ouch…

For the record, I’ve never actually had a colonoscopy, but I imagine this is how it goes.  I’m actually starting to get a bit nervous about going to the doctor… I’m approaching that age, and he’s starting to give me… a look… it’s very uncomfortable…

…but probably less so than the colonoscopy is going to be…

#468 – Snyder Part the Second

And we’re back in the saddle.  Resizing lettering continues to frustrate.  I’m going to have to seek out an expert.

In any case, you have to hand it to Governor Rick, the man has a plan for Michigan…  a wicked scary plan, but a plan none-the-less.  The guy has only been in charge a few weeks, and he already has sweeping authority to dismiss local governments at a whim and appoint emergency managers (be they human or corporation).  It’s amazing.  I’ve actually been looking at the criteria required to declare the necessary “state of emergency”.  There are, in fact, a list of criteria that would have to be met, and they all sound very reasonable until you get to that last little line where the requirement is that the Governor need only suspect that the current city government (or other public body such as school districts, public utilities, etc) policies would incur a debt.

Well he can suspect anything…

It will be interesting to see if any of these powers are actually used, and the ensuing court battle that follows.  Dismissing an elected body and appointing someone (or something) that is not answerable to the governed seems… contrary to the constitution somehow… we shall see.

#467 – I Feel So Nekid…

Greetings! I’m still on the road posting from my phone, so I’ll keep this short. This officially ends my simulcasting of Saggy Man Breasts. Thank you all for your patience during this… Indugence. I realize that it’s not your typical S O-T fair, but I just wanted to get things out there, so that I could move on and get to work. I waste an amazing amount of energy putting things off until the “right moment.”. Enough. I’ve been hiding the details of my weight so long that it feels al bit weird being so open about it on SMB, but whatever…

I have found I really enjoy doing Saggy. Almost as much as I like S O-T. It’s a, very different process. Whereas with Slightly, things are written in advance, and I spend hours worrying over the art, Saggy is really just a header leading into the discussion of the day, so it is just a quick capture of a thought, rapidly sketched out and put down. It’s a very different focus. Saggy man Breasts will continue on it’s own site 7 days a week… (until I’m skinny anyway… So it’ll be a while…). Slightly will continue here Monday, Thursday and Sunday.

#466 – Water, Water, Everywhere…

Now I drink a lot of water. Diet or no, I’ve got a gallon of cold water in the fridge which is probably not going to make it through the night…

But on a diet… Holy Christ! There must be something else to drink! Diet soda is generally a no-go because… ick… Coke Zero actually isn’t bad, but generally isn’t available at the soda fountain. There is tea, of course, but I only like instant, and sweetened in form…

More later once I find a hotspur.

#465 – Urge to Kill… Rising…

Welcome to day two of simul-casting with Saggy Man Breasts.

I am generally very good about reading labels.  How many calories are their?  Fat grams?  Whatever… As I am starting this diet by restricting calories (to the quite generous 2000 as recommended by my nutritionist Glenda the Stinky Witch of the East Wind), it’s important to know what is in each food item I consume.  I pay careful attention to portion size because they don’t always sync up quite right with expectations.  Heck, I have a jar of pickles in the fridge that lists the serving size as 1/2 pickle!

But a pot pie?!?  Really, a pot pie?!?  That one I did not catch until I was just about to dive in to the chicken- and broccoli-filled deliciousness.  Check out the label:

Marie Callendar Pot Pie Nutrition Label

Wait... 1+1 doesn't equal 2?!?

I was shocked!  I shouldn’t be, but I was.  What is really interesting though, is the line above the nutrition label.  Serving size may be 540 calories for half of a pie, but if you eat the entire thing then that is 1,120 calories.  I’m actually quite good at math, and I’m pretty sure that 540 + 540 does not equal 1,120.  I’m calling ‘Shennanigans’ here, folks!

As it was, eating the entire thing was too many calories, so I dutifully sliced the thing in half and through the other half out.  I now have some tupperware at work so that when I am hit with such surprises in the future, I can at least keep from throwing good food in the trash.

#464 – Getting Back on the Horse

Greetings!  Things are going to be a little different over the next few days.  I am in dire need of getting in shape, so I will for the next four days be simulcasting this strip with my dieting strip Saggy Man Breasts.  When it comes to dieting, willpower has never been an issue, but sticking with it week after week can be, so SMB is my effort to crowd source my motivation and gives me an outlet for discussing/lampooning the trials and tribulations of dieting.

This is, of course, the formal announcement of Saggy Man Breasts, but of course, many of you already new about it as I was asking for opinions.  In any case, it’s public now, and I don’t think any of you (at least those of you who have met me or seen the “mustache” pic) are surprised by the need for weight loss.  It is what it is.

So, we will have SMB (I really like the url for that site) simulcast here through Sunday as an introduction, and we will return to our good friend Rick Snyder on Tuesday…

…and there will be Penguicon news… oh yes… there will be Penguicon news…

#463 – Snyder: Part the First

So… you are probably all aware that Jar Jar the State Assembly has voted the Governor of Michigan emergency powers, so that he can declare any city, township, or public body in a state of fiscal emergency, dismiss the duly elected body and appoint an emergency manager answerable only to him.  Neat-O!

As discussed earlier, I did away with comic life today, and did everything within photoshop.  The word ballons, aren’t bad, but I need to figure a way to get good curves in the tail.  Interestingly, I had to make the comic 50px larger than normal because the resize wasn’t leaving the letters as crisp as when I export them as a tiff from Comic Life.  Not sure why that would be… I’ll have to play with it a bit more.

#462 – Relationships

At work, I always try to install a simple lesson in the mind of my employees.  That lesson?  The Point of Diminishing Returns. You can tweak that cytometer’s alignment all day long, and maybe gain a channel or two for your efforts, but the effect on the final outcome?!?  Zero.  As important as knowing how to do things right is knowing when to say.  “That’s it.  We’re done.  Moving on.”

So too with today’s comic.

(You thought I was heading somewhere else with that, didn’t you?)

In yet another stylistic experiment, I became fascinated with the minimalism of comics such as Cyanide and Happiness.  While I will admit, that the comic is the equivalent of an eternal fart joke delivered by glorified stick figures, it’s very simple style is rather engaging… it focuses the reader on what is being said and just presents the essential elements required for telling a story or delivering a punchline.  I must have drawn and redrawn this thing about 20 times, and I can’t say I nailed the style… but… point of diminishing returns… time to just get it out there and have a laugh, so here you go.

There’s actually always a bit of risk running these stylistic strips, of course.  The biggest is that the front page of my site is going to be this page for the next 36 hours or so, and new visitors are likely to get exactly the wrong impression of my comic… but what are you going to do?

As per the stages of relationships, I’m not actually that cynical, but Yahoo has been running a lot of relationship “stories” lately (How to tell if she’s really interested, Key things to notice on that first date, Is the romance dead… that sort of thing), and this is the wisdom I gleaned… hopefully it can act as a guiding light to someone out there.

#461 – In 3D!!!!

So, yeah… the 3DS comes out today, and early reports say it’s pretty cool… and that the battery life is pretty bad…

I have to admit that while I consider myself and old school gamer, I’ve never been a Nintendo fan.  My systems of choice back in the day were Atari, Sega and Commodore.  I never really understood the attraction of Mario or Zelda (there I said it!).  By the time I wanted a cartridge-based portable, the Game Gear just seemed to offer a better experience than the Game Boy (though with truly terrible battery life).  When it comes down to it, I prefer the PSP with it’s gorgeous screen and old-school gaming style to the DS (of any variant), so it’s out, but I feel no need to buy one.  Things I shall do today instead of buying one include:

  1. Kissing a girl (Laurie)
  2. Cleaning the townhouse.
  3. Sheparding a Corn Beef on it’s smokey journey to the land of pastrami.
  4. Returning a 6-week old microwave with slightly ‘splodey electronics.
  5. Kissing a girl (Laurie)
  6. Dragon Age II
  7. Going for a walk around the lake.
  8. Planescape: Torment
  9. …and ideally… Kissing a girl (Laurie).

I made the stereogram over at flash-gear.  Interestingly, I find my eyes can see the predominantly red ones just fine, but can not focus on the blue ones…

#460 – Elizabeth

Never my favorite actress, but a Hollywood icon.  The great ones are fading fast, and Kirk Douglas advances to the next round…
