With #1, in book form I think shorter commentary is best (because you're reading it all in one shot, and commentary disrupts the flow of the reading experience). #3 should be avoided. Not only is it too much work and may interfere with your time for current Slightly Off-Topic updates, but it messes with strips that reference the older style, like the New Year's strip from this year. #2 is a definite (yay, extras!).
