Good Lord, did we stink up the floor last night. IU outplayed us from one side of the floor to another, so you can hardly begrudge them then win… heck it’s the first one since ’08 isn’t it? The Boilers just weren’t cohesive and could not find the bucket to save their lives. Bad game…
Bad reffing, too… Matt Painter said after the game that he thought the game was called fairly, and I agree. The refs weren’t favoring either team with their terrible, terrible calls. Laurie and I were just flabbergasted by some of the calls made. I think my favorite was the tipping call where the player didn’t come within a foot of the ball. Swatting at something is not tipping, but whatever…
Good game guys… you still suck, but good game…
(I wonder if these strips will ever come back to haunt me should IU want to hire me to run their flow core some day?!?)
Oh well… so Super Bowl Sunday… I’ve been working hard *not* to see the commercials in advance on the net. I suspect they will the only interesting things to watch because… the Giants and the Patriots? Boring… for the record, Go Giants, but still…

Man! That’s a lot of words, but I really did want to take a moment to discuss this Tuesday’s Little Caesar Bowl with Purdue against Western Michigan. I realize the Little C is the equivalent of being invited to the NIT, but it’s not like everybody get’s to play in a bowl game (right IU?), it just feels that way…
Regardless, the Boilers won, and as a Boilermaker, I’m proud of my boys.
You knew it was going to be a weird game when after their first touchdown (the first score of the game, mind you), WMU opted to go for the two point conversion rather than just kicking for the extra point. Purdue certainly answered, though… I mean on onside kick in the first half is weird, but *two*?!? And both successful? That’s just bizarre.
Now credit where it’s due. The WMU quarterback is really good down field. He has a great long-passing game, but really (really) needs to work on his red zone game. He threw away (pun intended) so many opportunities to win the game. I kinda feel bad for them.
As per the Boilers, I’m not sure what the deal was with them opting to play quarterback shuffle, but at least everyone got to play. As usual the game play itself was rather clumsy but effective. The only bad moment was #2 throwing a punch. Not sure what that was all about. You’ve already won. Whatever the opposing team says, just smile and nod. I’m sure there was free pizza waiting for you in the locker room.
Finally, I know you IU fans were disappointed that I didn’t mock you mercilessly after your loss of the old Oaken Bucket a few weeks back. I hope that fact that I’m mentioning your incredibly bad football program in today’s strip makes up for any slight you may have felt.
And with that I end Slightly Off-Topic for 2011. Be sure to check back on Sunday for the first strip of the New Year!

So first, let me say up front before the corrections come rolling in that I didn’t do any research on the human brain, and therefore, I just assigned the functions to random locations. If you are trying to pass your anatomy exam based on anything contained within the world of Slightly Off-Topic, you are doing something very, very wrong.
That being said, wouldn’t that be a great surgery to offer some day? We spent the weekend in West Lafayette watching the Boilermakers roll over Northern Illinois in Basketball (okay — fair enough — it was only Northern Illinois) and Ohio State in football (though again, to be fair, who hasn’t beat Ohio State this year?!?). I do, however, find that every time I set foot on Purdue’s campus, I am hit smack dab in the middle of the forehead with this sense of regret that I never graduated from there.
An odd regret, perhaps, for a man that holds two degrees, but there you have it. When we left Indiana for California and a job at that wonderful old biotech, SyStemix, it was the right choice for my family, and honestly, my heart wasn’t in continued matriculation at the time. However, as soon as we had settled, financially, I went back to school, and it was a wonderful experience (though that full-time schooling and full-time job thing was a bit exhausting… God Bless Laurie for picking up the slack at home!). So, there’s no logical reason for it, but it is still… the great undone…
But whatever… someday. For now, there are more important things to be done… like convincing Laurie that just because Skyrim came out in Novemember, it doesn’t mean that I have to wait until Christmas in case “someone” wants to buy it for me…
…yeah… I’m losing that battle…

Wow! Saturday’s game was some ugly, ugly football. I’m pretty sure if we had put either team up against *any* Indiana high school football team, the college teams would have taken a beating. To be fair, though, the closest thing to resembling actual football was served up by IU’s team. I dare say that the quarterback even managed a few very pretty passes. So, hats off to you IU. It’s about time you guys got the bucket back for once!!!
…and of course, one can always count on Indiana University Football to bring some serious class to any sporting event… like when their player got ejected because he decided it would be a good thing to start wailing on the Purdue quarterback even though he was already on the ground… or when the IU team decided to come back onto the field to run a victory lap around the Marching Band during their post-game show (even though 99% of the crowd had already left)… as I say… nothing but class!
In any case, it was the end of a terrible season for both teams. Purdue burnt through about 50 quarterbacks due to injury and IU… well… the coach has been let go, so we’ll leave it at that…
Thanksgiving has come and gone which means, amongst other things, that Brittany finally has to stop yelling at me for listening to Christmas music. The holiday was good. The usual Turkey trot between family gatherings, of course, but it was good to see everyone. (The Turkey was VERY good, Mom!). It’s nice to be back home, though. Nothing like sleepy in your own (lumpy) bed! How were your holidays?
Ah, how I love the Old Oaken Bucket game, the only football game I can ever really be bothered to watch. For those keeping track, that puts the overall record at 56 wins for Purdue, 26 for IU and 3 ties. God, it must be depressing for Hoosier Alums to think about this game. Still it wasn’t a total route. Purdue did try and let them win the game in the third quarter for a bit, but unless they wanted to score the touchdowns for IU, there really was no chance.
So, IU sucks at Football… what else is new? I still love Bloomington and the IU campus.
I’ve had a surprising lack of entries from last weeks laptop bag competition. All four points are still available folks.
One final point about the game, it’s possible that the competition/rivalry grows with age. Perhaps we 40-somethings and 30-somethings take things a bit more seriously than do the students and recent grads. I’ll have to ask Jeff and Mike about it.
You know, it was just by chance that I happened to grab my Purdue hoodie from the closet yesterday. But what a happy chance it was. While I only officially follow cycling, curling and rugby, I am a fan of all things Purdue, and will, therefore, cheer them on in whatever they happen to be doing.
During and after yesterday’s game against Ohio State, the closet Purdue fans emerged from their dark hiding holes , and all the world was filled with smiles.
Upon reflection, I suppose that most of the happy folks we saw were really Michigan fans pleased that *someone* had managed to trounce Ohio State. After all, in Ann Arbor, any time Ohio State fails is cause for celebration…
…but I’m just going to pretend that it was all about Purdue… and that this is a sign of things to come.
As per the contest today, I wanted to draw your attention to a nifty little sports-related comic. The characters are all personified sporting equipment and the artist hales from Canada. As there was no obvious place to hide a code, I’ll just tell you that I am accepting the strip number as the code today. So go forth and win a messenger bag, folks!
So that’s why there was no comic last week, but no, we didn’t actually visit the Chocolate Shop. We generally find it best not to go drinking when driving our only child about 300 miles for the day and then driving her back. Yes…I’m pretty sure that was covered in Parenting 101 (which, for the record, is not a course offered at Purdue). We did stroll over to the Triple X (on the hill, but on the level) for a couple of Drew Brees Specials and then spent the rest of the time wandering campus and feeling nostalgic about days gone by.
It’s a weird thing when you start to take your child on trips to see colleges. She’s not out of the house yet, but you can feel it coming. There is a tendency amongst parents to want to throw the breaks on and keep our children from growing up, but there is also an opposite impulse that glories in seeing one’s offspring coming of age. The battle is played out as an eternal tug-o-war across the parental heart, but you can’t actually stop time, so you just keep doing what seems best for your child.
In any case, she was nonplussed with the biomedical engineering presentation, but seemed keen on computer engineering. She may also end up a writer, or a voice actor or…well, time will tell. Until then there are more days at home and more college trips ahead.
