#304 – Chapter Seven: The Plot Advances… Really, Really Slowly…

It’s actually unfair of me to characterize the action in an episode of Naruto Shippuden like this… to be really accurate, I’d have to insert at least six more panels and fill them with inane commercials for non-Naruto-related and slightly age-inappropriate toys!  I’d like to say that’s an exaggeration, but I’ve been watching the show with Brittany, and I swear there’s only about twelve minutes of cartoon per half-hour episode… and what story they do show is really only about two minutes of action spread way, way out.  I mean, I’ve seen episodes where the entire thing was just the team skipping through trees!  This isn’t the Lord of the Rings, you know… and speaking of the skipping, did they cut the animator’s salaries or something… when did the Ninja’s learn to fly?!?  Don’t they occasionally have to actually jump or something?!?  I don’t seem to recall anyone shouting Superman-flying jutsu or anything else, so why are they flying?!?…

I’m just saying…

So today is officially the last clue in the year-long Crumpler Laptop Bag giveaway contest!  As far as a clue, well she’s at it again, so you should probably take the time to see who Colbey is… and then come to Penguicon this year to meet her creator!  Remember, you can always go back through the archives and find the past codes, but you have to be quick as I am ending the contest at 00:01am on February 3rd!

#195 – Chapter Six – He’s Not Emo, He’s Evil

#195 – Chapter Six – He’s Not Emo, He’s Evil

And thus in our sixth chapter of Narutard Theater, I appeal to the legions of frothing fan girls out there to come to their senses. I know you all want to believe that Sasuke is dreamy and noble, but he is clearly a fellow that has decided the best solution to any problem is to stick a kunai in its back. This is, generally speaking, not the path of a noble warrior, and very few who start upon it are ever able to return.   So do me a favor… just let it go, okay?

There’s nothing I hate more than being surrounded by a gaggle of Sasuke fan girls discussing how they just know he’s truly a good guy, but he’s just misunderstood.  Yeesh… I get chills just thinking about it.

So, I’m in the middle of putting together book one… which is a LOT of work.  A lot of strips need tweaking just to fit the layout and still be legible. In the case of Narutard Theater strips, I have to put together a proper legal blurb citing that the characters are used as parody only and that they are owned by… well… whoever actually owns them.  I’d like to get the actual blessing of the folks involved, but I suppose that doesn’t happen too often for parody.  I imagine there’s a good chance that Wizards of the Coast might give me their blessing for Dungeons and Dragons Theater as the strips are used to frame commentary on the state of the game and such. In any case, as far as a print bonus, what would you prefer to see:

  1. Enhanced commentary on the strips
  2. A few “bonus strips” tossed in
  3. A few of the early strips redone in color and the current drawing style
  4. Some combination of the above (be specific)
  5. Other (be specific)?

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

Chapter Five – Vengeance is Mine!

Chapter Five – Vengeance is Mine!

Narutard Theater is always an interesting process. I bribe Brittany to take up the author’s mantle and come up with a good Naruto gag. She comes back with a joke that I may or may not get (she’s the fan, I only watch the show to score some Daddy/daughter time), and then I tweak the joke to make it (hopefully) a bit more approachable to a wider audience. You can always see the original sketches and compare them to the final product by clicking the vote buttons to the left (at least if you’re reading this on Slightly Off-Topic rather than one of the mirrors – and if you are reading on a mirror, pop over to the main site and let me know what you think of the recent site redesign). The changes were not substantial this time, but who can resist putting in a mini-Naruto?!? I’m only human.

Ah well, I can’t blame her for liking the shows she likes. I’ve enjoyed plenty of strange cartoons in my time. Especially in college. ‘Course I was quite the dork back then… but at least I didn’t live in a dorm.

Okay, I’m off to bed. Before I go, though, I’ll just take a moment to remind you of our Anniversary contest going on all year long. Trust me, the Crumpler bag is well worth the effort!
