#244 – Shades of Things to Come

#244 – Shades of Things to Come

You know… Arbor Woods is actually an apartment complex, and the News Guy is a home-owner, but I like the name and it works for basing the ongoing storyline on a Torchwood riff.

…and speaking of which, have you seen Torchwood: Children of Earth yet?!? I’ve been holding off on this to give you all a chance. If you haven’t, the dvd is available, so you have no excuse. It is fabulous! Gripping, tremendously sad, but fabulous. I was quite surprise by it, though, as I hadn’t expected them to be ending the series so soon. Well, I suppose it doesn’t have to be ended, but yeah… the plug is pulled.

Can you believe it’s apple-picking season, already? Where did the summer go? I’m about to pick up the phone and see if I can find any orchards with Honey Crisps ready. The orchard is always a good way to spend an afternoon.

Hey, Jynksie is going to do extra updates this week. Be sure to check it out!

An Open Letter

Dear L’il Kim,

I think we at Slightly Off-Topic have been more than fair in dealing with you and your regime.  We’ve welcomed you to our home, offered you a recurring role in the strip and The News Guy even offered to interview on his broadcast.  Imagine our surprise then as we watched the Daily Show this evening and saw YOU in studio talking to Mr. Stewart.  At first we thought that it might have been an impersonator, but at the 2:28 mark, John refers to you as L’il Kim!  That’s our thing! How could you?  After all this time?

Well, I understand that you’ve got to run your regime as you see fit.  I want you to know that I’m not hurt, I’m just disappointed…

#210 – Going Back!

#210 – Going Back!

The original story can be found here.
Angry New Yorkers… who could have imagined?!?

So, yeah… Slightly Off-Topics Classics… I know what you’re thinking… wtf, right? Well, it’s summer time which means that a lot of my favorite webcartoonists are going on vacation and running "classic" episodes to fill in the gap. Seems reasonable, but as it is so common in these summer-esque months, I thought I’d toss it a nod and a wink… just as a joke.

So, no… I’m not returning to the early drawing style. It’s kind of hard to draw that bad actually… It took me FOREVER to get just the right craptasticness… and is it just me or does the News Guy look a bit… naked? In any case, I did the entire thing in photoshop as in days gone by. All line work is on a single layer and the word balloons are non-existent. Heck, I even went back to the gif format. When I commit to something, I go all the way man!

In any case, all will be back to normal on Thursday… multiple panels and everything! See ya!

#209 – Going Brick

#209 – Going Brick

Why Lego? We’re just doing our part to help you all relax! Actually, today’s comic was inspired by the fact that Gamestop (and EBGames, Babbages and whatever other chain they’ve bought out) has the surprisingly entertaining Lego Batman on sale for any platform for $19.99 (new). All things considered, this is a tremendously good deal. They were out of the PC version when I went (we actually have three stores in town, but I only went to one), so I bought it for the 360. It’s a lot of fun… much better than Lego Indy. Of course, I don’t know how it will compare to Lego Rock Band… only time will tell.

Speaking of Rock Band, I picked up the PSP version. Headphones are a must, and I’m thinking I will have to install the hack to let me play it as an iso to run it from a memory stick (and save the poor battery), but it’s much better than I suspected as well. All in all, a good gaming weekend.

Now, where is that Sunday clue?  I have looked all over the house.

#181- Resolved

And thus, with a double-sized episode, we end our foray into storytelling! It’s actually been an interesting exercise. Sure this all started because I wanted to show off a spectacular piece of fan art, but I’ve learned a few things along the way…

  1. I enjoy telling stories. I enjoy an endless series of one-off gags as well, but I find that I do enjoy trying to spin a narrative, and you may see one crop up from time to time.
  2. I am WAY too influenced by Kevin Smith. Not in the potty humor sense, but rather than when I tell a story, I don’t focus much on action, but rather on dialogue. In fact I really seem to enjoy what would otherwise be a very simple course of action and breaking down each perceptible facet of that action and making it its own episode. The original concept of this storyline stretched on for the rest of the month in just this manner. However…
  3. …if I’m going to put effort into telling a story, I’d really rather not expend that effort on a storyline that relies too heavily on the classic crutches of the webcomic world. I mean, I don’t mind breaking the fourth wall or doing a retcon parody, but these are things that tend to annoy the readers and fellow creators and are best saved for a one-off gag.
  4. I really need to learn to draw people better.
  5. I really, really need to learn to draw people better!

Okay, so the News Guy is healthy, and everything is right with the world. Just one more thing before I go, though. For those of you participating in the laptop bag contest, let me drop a little daily wisdom on you. The code is there. It really is, you just have to look everywhere for it. Otherwise, it might get swept up in the details.

#179 – Introductions

Okay, so now we know who he is and that his intentions are good, but what is he planning to do, exactly. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I’m off to bed, but did I mention this? Old school News Guy cameo! Always a beautiful thing…

#177 – The Casualties of War

#177 – The Casualties of War

Is it me or is the News Guy having a bad week?

So the War ended this evening. I’ve mentioned the War before, but for those who missed it, Frumph from Webcomic Planet put together a little competition for webcomic creators. The goal of the competition was to push creators out of their comfort zone and get them out there actively promoting their comic. To achieve this, the first half of the competition was a resource gathering phase where you would be awarded crystal points for each act of self-promotion you performed (advertising, guest art, supporting other creators. You can read the details at Frumph’s site). Once resources were gathered, stats and crystals could be purchased to arm your character. At this point it played out similar to a collectible card game, and the battle was fast and furious. Not always smooth, mind you, but always entertaining!

Did it work? For me, certainly. As a result of this competition, I’ve met a lot of new people in the field, learned a lot more about cartooning and have developed a habit of actively speaking about the comic rather than remaining silent about it until the nebulous day in the future when it was "good enough" to mention. It’s a work in progress, but I’m proud of my work and enjoy talking about it.

I’d like to take a moment to publicly thank Frumph for all the effort he put into this event. Not only designing, organizing and moderating the competition, but also the effort of finding prize sponsors. He put a tremendous amount of work into this, and it went very well! I’d also like to thank my fellow warriors. I couldn’t put you all into the comic, because this was a spur of the moment strip and it’s already 3 am!!!! For those in the strip, I hope the folks at Apple of Discord, Life’s A Witch, Ant Guy, Fantasy Story and Union of Heroes don’t mind my rough handling (drawing) or their characters.

So, no, I didn’t win, but I stand in a very respectable second place…

…and I’ve got a year to heal. I’ll get you next time Arne!

#176 – Btown Burns!

Figures. The News Guy destroys all life in Ann Arbor and then what does he do? Heads down to my favorite city to muck things up there as well. It’s just not right, I tell you.

Sorry about the sudden onset of continuity in an otherwise gag-a-day strip, but when the undead walk among us, and one of them is the News Guy. Well, that story will take a few installments to tell.

We’ll have to wait till Thursday to see what’s up with our handsome new stranger.

#175 – Does Your Zombie Bite?

#175 – Does Your Zombie Bite?

Special thanks to Zed the zombie of Ted & Zed fame for stopping by the Studio today. For those that have never been, Ted and Zed is my all-time favorite Zombie comic. Sure, he’s a Zombie, but that doesn’t mean he can’t have a bosom buddy, right. I highly recommend you all stop by for a dig through the archive.

So, I know what you’re all thinking. "Dave, why is the News Guy a Zombie?!?" Well, he’s crossed over to the dark side in honor of the coolest freakin’ piece of fan art I’ve ever received. I opened the mail box the other day to find a note:

It occurs to me that we haven’t seen much of our friendly neighborhood News Guy in a while. And how much do we really know about how and where he spent his recent sabbatical. A lot can happen down the Rabbit Hole…

Happy Birthday! Of course, it isn’t enough to make the News Guy or a Zombie – It has to be the News Guy Zombie.

Accompanying the note:

BRAAAIIIINNNSSSS are required to deliver the news.

Check out my headset

How cool is that? Now, full disclosure… I’ve known the sender for years, so it’s more a "friend" art than a "fan" art, but I like it either way!!!

Of course, this leaves the News Guy is in a bit of a pickle…
