Welcome to yet another exciting episode of…wait… that’s Not Dungeons and Dragons Theater!

Guess what I found in the mail room this morning?  That’s right my $0.99 ebay copy of Temple of Apshai!  I am so psyched right now!  Not only is the disk in good shape, but the box is complete down to the manual, addendum sheet, control sheet and advert catalogs!  I know what I’m doing while Laurie is out of town.

For those who’ve never played, this is one of the pivotal games in 8-bit history.  I originally played it on the Commodore 64… a lot.  Temple of Apshai, Wizardry, Bards Tale… these are the key games from my youth…

One neat feature of Apshai is that they tried to overcome the limitations of the 8-bit hardware by including detailed room descriptions in the manual:

Rooms 36-39 – A large shed.  Tools and debris are scattered about.  Signs of recent usage and a sort of rumbling sound coming from somewhere within alert you to the presence of someone–or something–inside.  Could it be the thief?  Or something more sinister?

To the gamer of the time, this was… well, it wasn’t D&D, but it was fun… a whole lot of fun!
