It is, of course, unfair to blame the totality of congressional ineptitude on Senators Reid and McConnell, but I must admit that when I think of gridlocked public servants serving their parties rather than the people, these two constantly pop into mind… (and Pelosi and He-of-the-Artifical-Tan, of course). I tell my daughter that it is a self-resolving problem as these people must be re-elected and surely the American people have had enough and will start pink-slipping those that put parties (or special interest donations) ahead of the country. She tells me that I have a lot of faith in the American people… I’m sure she means that in a good way.
It will be interesting to see what will happen in the next few days… as a celebration of ineptitude if nothing else.
Having lived through a few retroactive tax increases and decreases, I try to remember that any damage done by legislation (even automatic legislation with headline-worthy nicknames) can be undone by further legislation. So even though Laurie and Brittany swill milk as they’re trying to fill their lumps for a six-week trek across the desert, I’ll keep my eye on the long-term rather than the short-term news cycle. I just wish our leaders would do the same… just for a change.
