#386 – Check the Replay

Sean is actually a paid intern, so this sort of thing is all par for the course… just a little more rapid than expected.

We were back in Indiana this week providing photography support for a reunion which was interesting.  The tabletpc decided to go in to failure mode, so I had to wait until I got back to The People’s Republic to finish this, but we did manage to bring something back from Indiana with us.  We have one of my nephews for the week!!!  A four-year-old uber-kinder!  It should prove entertaining…

…I just have to remember how to entertain a four-year-old…

…Good gravy, I’m getting old!

#380 – You Actually Have to Check Your Calendar…

If he can’t check his schedule, you’d think the News Guy could at least get one of the administrative assistants at work to give him a call.  Oh well, I hope he remembered to put on shoes before he left…

#378 – Men Are From Mars; Women Are… Just Weird…

I hate to put my words in my character’s mouths, but this is an actual conversation that occurred in my home last night… well, minus the ninth panel, anyways.

I know right?

Sometimes, I just do not understand that woman.  I mean… it’s Shark Week for crying out loud!

Oh well… Jane needs to catch up on her reading, so this will be good for her.

I’m sure you’ve also noticed that I’ve managed to recreate my font.  On with the contest.  How many of you have unlocked this rather simple code?

#366 – Happy 4th of July

Greetings to all from the States!  It’s Independence Day here, and that means fireworks, barbeque, patriotism and, with any luck, the Boston Pops (although Pops Goes the Fourth hasn’t been the same since it left A&E).

In any case, for the BBQ, I have a brisket which has been marinating for a few days in the smoker.  For Patriotism, we have a really bright comic with the News Guy doing his part (and I promise to reflect on the blessings this country has brought me).  For fireworks… well… I actually have none.  Laurie’s done in the Big Easy.  Brittany isn’t home from her friends yet, so I never got around to picking any up.  Shame on me.  I do have to shop today though…

This comic/card actually came about because of twitter.  I had posted a quick and dirty sketch of a chibi News Guy which was going to be the last panel of a guest strip (more on that when it posts), and well… it was pretty late at night as I couldn’t sleep,  so the rough sketch was pretty rough.  @96th thought his hair and headset looked like a turban and asked why he was wearing it.  My mind, of course, would not then be satisfied until I came up with a reason for him to be wearing a turban.  A few edits later, this is the result.  I still can’t sleep, though…

…and don’t worry about the News Guy.  I’m sure our troops will keep him safe!

#351 – I Happen to Like ‘The Postman’

For those participating in the annual contest, these next two weeks are a gimme!

So did anyone out there like Mr. Burton’s vision of Alice?  I’m getting to the point where all of his stuff seems the same to me, so I may be a bit biased.

#348 – A Cinematic Classic

So, I’ve been working on a movie poster for someone, and it was starting to hurt my brain, so I thought I’d whip up a quick one from a different movie for myself.

#335 – Sunday Secrets

I will admit to a bit of an addiction to the Sunday visit to Post Secret.  Smacks of voyeurism, I know, but I’m fairly fascinated by seeing the sort of secrets that people feel the need to reveal… some good, some bad, some funny and some down right ugly.  I always wonder how “secret” the secrets are, though… I know the keeper doesn’t reveal anything, but I wonder how many people are leaving bread crumbs in their card images to lead the people in their lives “back home” as it were…

In any case, for those curious about the final secret, I’d remind you to visit the Contest Corner above and start cracking that code!

#317 – Happy (Sorta) Birthday!

#317 – Happy (Sorta) Birthday!

Yes, it’s that time of year again. The time of year when I turn my comic into a birthday card to one of the webcomicking greats. Happy Birthday, Howard Tayler. For those that aren’t reading Schlock Mercenary, let me say that you are missing out on some wonderful storytelling. The humor is great, the art is wonderful, but it’s the storytelling that brings me back seven days a week. If you are at all interested in science fiction or how a web comic should be done, it’s worth your time to check out this strip. And if you visit his store, you can celebrate his birthday by buying some merchandise. I’m sure the News Guy would appreciate it if you did!

Now for some business, the Schlock logo and merch images are lifted directly from Howard’s web site. The character of Sergeant Schlock is the property of Howard Taylor and is used here without permission (it’s a birthday card, after all).

The first year I drew Schlock, I couldn’t do it… at all… no matter how hard I tried, I could not do it, so I traced him (I did tell Howard that I had done so). The second year, I refused to trace and thought that it was a decent effort. Not great, but a start. This year, I actually like the Schlock in the third panel. The fourth needs work, but what can you do? In any case, Howard was one of the inspirations behind my actually doing a webcomic, and I like to take this yearly opportunity to say thank you and wish him well on his birthday (which I believe he’ll actually be celebrating tomorrow). I also like the yearly opportunity to have Schlock pointing the plasma cannon in the News Guy’s face. It tickles me.

In any case, remember that Howard Tayler will be appearing at this year’s Penguicon. Hey, you could probably convince him to sign all that merch you’re about to buy, right?!?

#316 – Vancouver Olympic Coverage

#316 – Vancouver Olympic Coverage

I realize that Curling is the eternal butt of Winter Olympic jokes, but this last week has been so great for me.  I mean, I come home from work and Curling is on the TV… every single day! And then… at 10pm… after dinner and family time and what not… Curling comes on again!  It’s FABULOUS!

…and then came Wednesday… a rest day… I don’t know what they were thinking… I didn’t know what to do with myself… I started to clean the basement. What the heck is that about?!?  Laurie didn’t actually try to tranq me or anything, but she could see the tension building up in my system.  She did get me to sit down and watch the Boilers just eek one out against Minnesota, but yowza!  I need my curling fix… let’s see… just 17 more hours…

I’m not going to make it…
