#203 – Is This All a Dream, or Am I Really Alive? Whoa, That’s Deep…
A simple one-panel today, folks. I believe the reason why will be a bit more obvious on Tuesday, but I think today was a good day to discuss the upcoming live action Cowboy Bebop film. As I’ve mentioned over on LiveJournal, I believe Keanu Reeves is going to make an excellent Spike Spiegel. I realize that this is an immensely unpopular point of view, but the more I think about it, the more he seems to fit the character. Spike has never been a bubbling, font of emotion. He’s always held back and sarcastic, and that’s the sort of thing that Mr. Reeves does well. We already know he can handle the martial arts (as long as they leave the bullet-time effects at home), so what’s the worry? I did find this article while googling about this morning, which may help those of you still in doubt to feel a bit better about the whole situation. Dig the hair on the guy with glasses. There is a joke about having one’s head up a bull’s arse which seems strangely appropriate…
…and before I go, as is my manner on Sundays, I would like to offer a coincidentally topical, Hello Earthling.

You know, I don’t watch “Cowboy Bebop”, but I am one of those who generally regards Keanu Reeves acting as “a nightmare” – I love that line, by the way, with “Dangerous Liasons” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” being the worst offenders. However, he’s played many roles that people enjoyed him in (“Bill & Ted…
“, “Speed”, “The Matrix”, “Point Break”) because there’s something really great about him (and he embodied some of those characters very well) – just not his acting. So while he isn’t the best actor, he’s always entertaining to watch. Kudos to you for displaying an admitted “unpopular opinion” in regards to a popular guy. I hope you’re right and prove the fanboys/girls who think otherwise wrong (not that this is what you were going for).
Tsk tsk! That was “Much Ado About Nothing” not a “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, but your point is well taken.

Ouch! Thanks, Dave, for the correction (seriously – I like to know when I mess up and I do think it’s funny that I’m rambling about Keanu Reeves’ acting (hey, let’s watch him in “Hardball” and put it past us!) and I wrote the wrong film!) – sadly, my typo (I thought of the right one, typed the wrong one – huge thing to label a “typo”, but at least I didn’t say “King Lear”) that was the first movie I ever watched w/ the man I ended up marrying (next was “Surf Ninjas” – the epitome of dramatic acting and a great script, right?) and my favorite of the Branagh Shakespeare movies, so you’d think I’d have typed the right one.
I guess my posting brain is like both Keanu Reeves’ (whose movies I actually love to watch, but love to lampoon more) acting and a 90s UMF song – “Unbelievable”.
To Clarify: “Much Ado About Nothing” was the first movie I watched w/ him – I’m just sappy enough to know that we had deli submarine sandwiches and virgin strawberry daquiris… and don’t ask why I am telling my life story here…
It’s a good place to share your life story. And please understand the correction was all in good humor. Ado is on of my favorite movies on the planet (up there with Breaking Away and Real Genius… yeah… I have odd tastes), so I had to jump in!
Oddly, in Jr. High I was assigned a book (play) report on Ado. I read it. I hated it. I stood up in front of the class and related the story and the pointlessness and how very much I hated it and ended the oral report by dropping my copy of the book into the trash. Mr. Gorden was shocked as he assured me it was a great, great comedy… rich and textured and wonderful. I assured him that he was nuts.
Many years later, I saw “Ado”…
…though it be not written down, yet forget not that I am an ass.
I guess I had a bit more learnin’ to do…
Ah – Slightly Off-Topic – the companion site to the show “Cheers” – where everybody knows your life story.
No, I truly wasn’t bothered by the correction – I was sincerely and happily thanking you – I made a snafu, and I was glad you mentioned it. I never read the play (my favorite Shakespeare play is King Lear, followed by the Taming of the Shrew – though the more popular ones that have been done multiple times and ways in movies are excellent, too), but saw that movie and fell in love with the characters.
I’ve never seen “Breaking Away” (but with your range of references, including the Spandau Ballet one that got me hooked, I’ll definitely be checking it out), but I am a huge, huge fan of “Real Genius”. I make references to houses full of popcorn (and younger Val Kilmer) and that movie was one of the many reasons I love Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” (but, like, you, I realize I have rather odd tastes!)
Will you lose all respect for me if I admit that one of my favorite renditions of Shrew is from Moonlighting?!?
Not if I don’t lose credibility for having one of my favorite A Christmas Carol (I love Dickens, too) adaptations being a VH1-produced movie (Bill Murray’s “Scrooged” is my favorite.).
No, it wouldn’t Dave, mainly because nothing could change you – set and sure of the way. Now, if you confessed to having a copy of the record Bruce Willis recorded for Motown, I would, indeed, look at you sideways…
Uh… I do have it. The second one was better…
Uh… *runs*
Most of the first album is bad, but there are a few songs that are fun. The second album (which almost no one has heard) is actually pretty good…
…no accounting for my tastes, though. I throw myself on the mercy of the court! 😉
