I don’t always make it to the theater, but a John Cusack movie that I don’t want to see is a strange and unusual thing. The last time that happened was Must Love Dogs. However, when confronted with the constant barrage of advertising for Hot Tub Time Machine, the only thing that comes to mind is “What the heck and/or hades are you thinking, John?!?”
Now don’t get me wrong. My youth was built on being in quirky movies, and I’m glad for it. In my world, Loyd Dobler keeps the girl, Hoops never again has to give in to the cute and fuzzy bunnies and somewhere there is still a psychotic young paperboy trying to claim his two dollars…
… but Hot Tub Time Machine? Really? Maybe… just maybe, if you and Piven had ended your squabbling and he was there with you, I might consider it (because let’s face it — when you two are on screen together, plot doesn’t really matter because you guys are that entertaining), but… no. Just no.

Out of the mouths of Daves… This strip is hilarious, and I love the tags you used. The improv/”Who’s Line…” idea is another reason why
I can’t get enough of Slightly Off-Topic’s brilliance! If you don’t mind, was this one of those spur-of-the-moment, ripped from the Moviefonelines thoughts of yours, or has it been brewing for awhile, and is well-placed because of the Friday release?
I am also a huge John Cusack fan, and strangely enough, I saw a “Harvey Birdman – Attorney at Law” episode with a hot tub time machine from years ago.
I must say, though – I actually do want to see it (it all goes back to my 80s obsession, kind of the Mikey of movies – tell Winnie about it, she’ll watch anything and I also am a fan of Craig Robinson) not to mention it comes out on my birthday! It looks funny to me, but I’ve been fooled before. And nice Cusack movie references – “Better-Off Dead” is my favorite!
Actually, it was a bit of both. I’ve been brewing the strip in my mind since the advertisement barrage began, but had intended to run it on Sunday after the reviews were in. Let’s face it, this film is either going to be great or abysmal, and if the reviews were good, I’d have included some “I guess I don’t always call it right” verbage in the blog beneath the strip.
However, then @fesworks and @thatardraguy mentioned the film on Twitter yesterday afternoon and the the comic was stuck in my frontal lobe and had to be exercised. So with Stylus to Wacom, I cranked the strip out last night.
If it does turn out to be good, you’ll have to let me know because there’s zero chance of my venturing to the cinema to see it without heavy prompting.
I’d be hard pressed to name a favorite Cusack movie… I figure his best is yet to come… though Hot Tub is probably not it…
Also, Happy Birthday! Will there be cake?
I also wanted to note that I love that strip #325 happened to fall on 3/25! And I love the banter on #319.
Dave, your assessment of the movie and it’s premise (and the “constant barrage” of press/ads for it) is right on the money, so I completely understand your apprehension about seeing it. When I first heard the title, and for weeks afterward, I thought it was a joke and not a real movie. I actually should “discriminate” a bit more as to what I see in the theater, but the “comes out on my birthday” and “John Cusack” made it hard for me to resist. I’ll let you know if I like it.
And thank you – yes, there will be cake – it’s actually being prepared as I’m typing – my guy made me a cake that looks like a Devo Energy Dome (he wanted to surprise me, but I’m home at inconvenient times). We’ll have to see how it looks with the frosting on, but he got a few pans of differing sizes and it looks awesome right now!
okay, the 3/25 and #325 thing was just coincidence.
No need to discriminate more or less. The movie industry is about getting away for an hour or two and enjoying… whatever it is you enjoy. You should see my DVD shelf some time… Lots of movies with no other redeeming social value other than they are fun!
Cake sounds AWESOME!
