So we find ourselves once more in the midst of Banned Book Week. For today’s offering I give you the BBW-take on one of my favorite covers of The Fellowship of the Ring. Truly this is a fine fellowship of characters that people, for one reason or another, felt the need to try and suppress ‘for the good of the people.’
In our household we act out episodes of Captain Underpants nearly every day just to spite those evil book banners…
Well then I hope you have a large supply of unsoiled underpants at hand…
You can guess who gets to play Professor Poopypants…unsoiled underpants not required for that role…
Ewww…
I checked out the classic banned list on the ala.org site. I read a lot of them is school. The biggest issue I had with them was I found them boring.
Well, banned doesn’t necessarily mean entertaining.
Courtney (my wife) printed a list of the banned/challenged books and brought it to Morgen’s 3rd grade teacher yesterday. Asked what she thought of the list, and pointed out that several of the books are on the shelves at the back of the classroom.
Teacher got a VERY concerned look, which grew even more worried when Courtney said casually that “This is something that I’m rather passionate about.”
Of course, it wasn’t until several minutes further into the conversation that my wife made it clear that her “passion” was about the shortsightedness and sheer stupidity of people who would try to censor “Harry Potter”, “Frindle”, and the like…. the teacher’s relief was rather palpable!
🙂
I can see it now… “Dear God… not another one of these uptight freaks! Why do I have to deal with parents like this? Why, God, Why?!?” You should really tell Courtney not to torture teachers so…
