I’ve never understood why the US doesn’t have some equivalent of Boxing Day. It seems a good answer to the commercialized avarice that can precede Christmas. Oh well… not enough currency currently circulating to fill the poor boxes anyway… at least not in Michigan.

Our kids’ letters to Santa (my baby CAN’T read/write) didn’t ask for things for themselves this year.
The 8-year old wrote a long letter, explaining that she understands that “Santa is real busy” but that there are “lots of kids that don’t get anything”, and asked Santa if he could just give their books and toys to “other kids who need them more, because we have so much.”
The 5-year old just summed it up with, “Thank you for the things you gave us before, I love you Santa!”
Then they gathered up some seldom-used toys and books into a box, so we could bring them to “the donation place”. When I explained what Boxing Day is (admittedly, I had to look it up), the older one said, “Wow, they made a whole holiday just for us? Let’s tell everyone about it!”
(yeah, Santa was a bit touched by all this… he dropped off some Silly Bands and other trinkets, and a long letter in response. And stuff he WOULD HAVE given them DID make it to the Toys-for-Tots bin at work….)

At our casa, we celebrate boxing day many times a year. Of course, this is mostly driven by the commercialized avarice that leads us to accumulate enough stuff for the boxes…
I try and celebrate whenever the girls are gone for a few days… always a good time to de-clutter the house!
