So I was a bit surprised by the announcement that our President had been awarded the Nobel Peace prize. Certainly, he’s not the first US president to receive one, but it seems a bit… premature. We all expect great things from President Obama, but for God’s sake, let him actually achieve them before handing out the awards…
In kids sports these days, they tend not to keep score. At the end, everyone gets a trophy… and, in the end, the trophy is meaningless. Let’s keep the Nobel from similar degradation, shall we? Can we do it? Yes, we can…
Edit – Hey everyone, Tara is coming to Penguicon. Just think, if you win, you can show her your Crumpler Bag!

He’s already achieved quite a bit, actually (Most notably the closing of Guantanamo Bay and the ending of 8 years of “Cowboy Diplomacy”). He is capable of doing so much more with the remaining 3 or 7 years (I want 7!), but I think this Peace Prize is a gesture of peace in itself: a symbol for the new relationship between the US the rest of the world. In short, this award isn’t just for what he’s already done, but it’s a way to help him do even more by boosting his international reputation.
(This is all speculation, of course.)
I get that. But, handling the Peace prize is as an olive branch seems a bit… thin. I also wouldn’t necessarily call the relocation of prisoners a satisfactory ending to Gitmo. If they’re still being held unjustifiably then that’s not a resolution. In any case, I’m just saying that the prize is more effective as a “thank you” than a “here’s hoping”.
I loved this one, and share the sentiment (and also expect or…er, hope for great things from President Obama)…
Time will tell, but here’s hoping. Health care reform has me a bit concerned because the Dems seem to want to pass anything just to say they did and the ‘Pubs want to block anything because it’s from the Dems. Howzabout we all sit down, work together and focus to get a true reform out in a reasonable amount of time? You know… do your frickin’ jobs!
President Obama, you are our leader, and you can feel send the senators and reps to bed without supper if they continue to misbehave.
Time will tell says it all. No one should “jump the gun”, and yet again, I agree with your sentiment on the “give the Health Care bill to Mikey, he’ll pass anything” vs. the “We cannot let them succeed – not based on the merits of the information (which I’m not saying don’t need major tweaking), but b/c we see it as defeat”.
Ego should not outrank the actual needs of US citizens and constituents!
Even if President Obama sent them to bed w/out dinner, you know lobbyists would be waiting to climb up the rose trellis(sp) with snacks and promises galore…
